Purpose of Role:


The Head of Retail QA role is accountable for the quality assurance of all Retail implementations covering the in house built systems for shop till terminals, Self service betting terminals and display.


This role leads a team of quality assurance analysts, delivering manual and automated testing, ensuring that a quality product is delivered into the shops with no impact to the shop operation. The role is also tasked with delivering a cost effective retail test capability, both from a team, test environment, equipment and process.


The key objectives are to build core UK capability for retail testing, ensure the offshore development team in Hyderabad has the appropriate test capability, even expanding the remit of testing to India, build a thorough automated test capability and comprehensive reporting to monitor and measure the quality output from the test cycles.


Key Responsibilities:


This role, reports into the IT Retail Director and has a number of key responsibilities


  • Quality Assurance testing
    • Implementation of the retail changes of your project in line with the business expectations
    • Devise and establish a quality procedures, standards, and specifications
  • Define, own and drive the testing strategy
  • Creating test plans, cases, and scripts based on business requirements and technical specifications
  • Shape and improve the QA and testing processes in line with continuous business and process improvement
  • Establish and ensure that a defect management process is followed during testing
  • Ensure that the right tools and technology are identified and adopted to support both Manual and Automation testing
  • Analyze and track QA-related artifacts and metrics for reporting and auditing purposes
  • Work with project stakeholders to determine the appropriate quality initiatives to implement during system development life cycles

  • Automation Testing
    • Lead the collaborative, dynamic planning process - prioritising the work that needs to be done
    • Responsible for defining and implementing the automation strategy across the teams


  • Create/Assist/Troubleshoot the development of Test Automation Framework, Standards, Procedures, Processes, and Best practices as related to Test Automation
  • Maintain and Guide Test Automation Suites Execution and undertake analysis of results to ensure that software meets or Exceeds specified standards and/or client and technical requirements
  • Define and report key performance metrics around automated testing
  • Develop and analyze new requirements and ensure new features are considered in test automation for a consistent experience across development




  • Management of a team
    • Responsible for permanent Test Leads and Test Analyst performance and general day to day managing of the QA team. Also, to manage any 3rd party or contracting testing resource


  • Mentoring and training of internal testing resources
    • Recruit and train/coach team members to align with organisation testing objectives for manual and automation testing delivery
    • Complete timely and thorough annual performance reviews, career development plans and annual salary planning for direct reports
    • Utilising the Hyderabad location where appropriate


  • Finance
    • Control of the cost of the team
    • Forecast the overall yearly budget for the testing team for supporting the overall project deliverables
    • Track and manage the budgets through the financial year and provide financial reporting

  • Ability to communicate at all levels
  • Strong experience of Waterfall, Agile/Scrum and iterative / incremental software delivery
  • Expertise in setting up Automation Suites in CI/CD Environment



  • Educated to degree level in a technology related degree
  • Delivery in a retail environment
