What you will be doing

GVC’s tax team is responsible for managing close to £1bn in annual tax payments across more than 20 countries. We’re not just a FTSE 100 business: in the UK alone, we’re a Top 20 taxpayer. VAT, GST and gambling taxes account for the majority of taxes we pay, so effective management of indirect taxes is a critical success factor for our business.

As an Indirect Tax Manager at GVC you’ll be at the forefront of helping us to manage both existing tax obligations as well as emerging obligations in the fast-developing and leading-edge world of the taxation of digital services all over the world.

You’ll be working closely with people from across the business and around the world – from accountants to lawyers to retail specialists, product specialists and technology experts in the UK, Gibraltar, Malta, India and elsewhere – to understand and advise on the indirect tax implications of operations and future plans.

You’ll be reporting to the Head of Indirect Tax, as part of a team of four indirect tax specialists, within a broader tax team of 13.

You’ll need to stay abreast of international developments in VAT, GST and gambling taxes, including the evolving areas of taxation of digital businesses, taxation of electronically supplied services and electronic marketplaces and point-of-consumption taxes.

Key responsibilities

Act as a trusted business partner, e.g. assisting accounting, procurement, legal, commercial and other colleagues in understanding, in plain English, the VAT, GST and gambling tax considerations of their work and the impact on the wider business.

Provide specialist input to governance and risk management processes (such as Senior Accounting Officer in the UK) and tax authority audits.

Review and sign-off VAT, GST and gambling tax returns for a variety of jurisdictions prepared by the Indirect Tax Adviser and other finance colleagues in the UK and further afield, to ensure quality control, reduce the risk of incorrect filings, and help the business comply with its international tax obligations.

Identify and implement opportunities to streamline and create more scalable indirect tax return processes to improve the efficiency of the indirect tax team and to comply with new data handling, retention and filing obligations (e.g. the “Making Tax Digital” requirements in the UK).

Work closely with other members of the broader tax team on a range of special projects which require international indirect tax expertise, such as M&A, corporate restructuring, dispute resolution, indirect tax analysis of new products and addressing the indirect tax consequences of entry into new markets.

Stay up-to-date with international developments in indirect taxes, such as the introduction of new taxes, changes to existing legislation and case law developments, in order to identify and communicate risks and opportunities for the business and help shape the business’s response to these changes.

Specialist skills and experience

  • ACA/ACCA and/or CTA qualified (or equivalent)
  • Strong VAT/GST technical knowledge, including:
  • Partial exemption
  • VAT on cross-border transactions
  • Familiarity working directly with ERP systems (preferably Oracle Cloud/Fusion)
  • Confident designing, reviewing and working with Excel-based tax returns
  • Ability to build and maintain relationships with a variety of internal stakeholders (such as finance, legal and commercial colleagues) and external stakeholders (such as tax authorities) and be recognised as a trusted expert
  • Excellent written and spoken English
  • Knowledge and experience of the taxation of digital services (e.g. EU VAT on ESS)
  • Experience of working with data and technology specialists to streamline processes
  • Experience of, or an interest in, the gambling sector
  • Proficiency in a major European language other than English (e.g. Spanish, German, French)
